Associate Professor Justin Bessell is a General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Australian Metabolic and Obesity Surgery. He is also a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at Flinders University and the University of Adelaide, and formerly a Senior Consultant Surgeon at Flinders Medical Centre.
Associate Professor Bessell also provides visiting surgical services to the Darwin Private Hospital and the Australian Defence Force. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel for the Army Reserve, and has deployed to war zones in East Timor (twice) and Solomon Islands, and to Banda Aceh in support of ADF military operations. He is the former Chairman of both the Military Section of the College of Surgeons and the SA Regional Board in General Surgery.
As well as his specialty of bariatric, metabolic and weight loss surgery, he continues to perform a wide variety of general, upper gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery, interventional endoscopy procedures, and colonoscopy bowel cancer screening.
In 2003 Associate Professor Bessell founded Australian Obesity Surgery (now Australian Metabolic and Obesity Surgery), which enshrined the concept of a holistic, multi-disciplinary approach to medical weight loss. The collaboration embeds allied healthcare professionals within the matrix of obesity management using scientifically-proven, evidence-based therapies. While novel at the time, this approach has since developed into the standard of care for bariatric practices. He is also a member of the Specialist Society for Bariatric Surgeons in Australia (ANZMOSS).
Graduating from The University of Adelaide in 1987, he went on to complete a Doctorate in minimally-invasive surgery, culminating in a six-month period of research into robotically-assisted laparoscopic surgery in Germany. Prior to returning home, he spent a further two years in Brisbane and Leicester.
He is married with 3 children and enjoys racing bicycles and cars.
Associate Professor Bessell has published over 80 medical articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed international surgical journals, and has presented innumerable papers and research topics at national and international surgical meetings and conferences. He also regularly reviews cases for the SA Coroner, provides specialist advice to the Victorian Coroner, and providing specialist reports to Courts throughout the country and expert testimony in Court, acting as an independent examiner for Return to Work SA, and performing second-line assessments for the RACS audit of peri-operative mortality.
